Biotechnology was born in the 1970s in the San Francisco
Bay Area. The fanfare surrounding the establishment of
our first two endeavors, Genentech and Cetus, was
minimal and importance of these ventures was not readily
grasped. How times have changed! Now biotechnology has
altered the face of the entire planet. Previously
unimaginable diagnostics, therapies, and medical devices
are now available to the world, and new breakthroughs
are made every day.
Northern California is unique in
that we have all of the ingredients for biotechnology in
one concentrated region. Northern California is a magnet
for entrepreneurs, sophisticated capital partners,
scientific talent, and savvy business managers. Most
importantly, Northern California’s life science industry
understands the patterns that cultivate success in
growing companies.
Among the factors that attract
quality talent to Northern California are the region’s
world-class universities and medical schools, including
UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Stanford University, UC
Davis and UC Santa Cruz. Academic excellence ensures an
ongoing supply of fresh scientific visionaries and
enthusiastic researchers for this rapidly growing
industry. These institutions pump more than $2 billion
in new research into the Northern California cauldron of
innovation each year. More than 50 percent of all
companies spun out of California universities come from
Bay Area institutions, and, with more than thirty new
bioscience companies establishing roots here annually,
we are home to more biotech businesses than any other
region of the world.
Northern California is the center
of the international venture capital market, hosting 30
percent of all active VC firms in the United States, and
with 28% of all life science venture investment in the
United States being made here. Venture capital has
remained strong in our region, continuing to fund life
science companies during periods in which VC investment
has dropped throughout the nation.
Companies that locate in Northern
California can be assured of available managers,
employees, and consultants experienced in the life
science field. And it is not just technical and
professional skill, it is the entrepreneurial spirit—a
willingness to take risks and think creatively—that
makes Northern California’s workers so valuable to the
life science sector.
BayBio welcomes you to Northern
California, the birthplace of biotechnology.
